An annual event, the Dragon Boat Festival, is the largest Asian American celebration in New England. A highlight of the event is the display of brightly colored dragon boats paddled along the Charles River. Various competitions take place throughout the day, and family activities include dances, martial arts demonstrations, traditional Chinese performances, and more.
The boat races are traditionally held on the fifth day of the fifth moon on the lunar calendar. The festival commemorates the life and death of Qu Yuan (340-278 BC), a political leader and China's first distinguished poet.
