about East River Park (John V. Lindsay):

The East River Park is more than ready for its close up. In the summer, you can catch a breeze off the East River, and the tennis courts (just north of the Williamsburg Bridge), baseball/softball fields, and, especially, the gorgeous soccer field (at E. 6th Street) all draw a crowd. Shoot hoops with your kids at one of the basketball courts or check out a game of cricket! The park also offers areas for barbequing.

The esplanade is packed with families biking, and joggers, and folks just out for a stroll.

East River Park is the largest park south of 59th Street in Manhattan. As the weather gets warmer, toddlers romp in the tot-play water area, complete with harbor seal spray showers. The park also includes gardens, walking paths and pedestrian seating.

Asphalt volleyball courts and asphalt basketball courts are available as well.

getting there:

Ramps over the highway are few and far between. Try E. 6th Street or Cherry Street. By subway: F to Delancey Street; L to 1st Avenue; J, M, or Z to Delancey/Essex. The park stretches from Montgomery Street to E 12th Street.
