The Poe Cottage was the last home of the great American writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849); he lived here from 1846 to 1849 and wrote The Bells, Eureka, and Annabel Lee while in residence. The tiny one-and-one-half story cottage, built in 1812, was typical of the workmen's houses once prevalent in the Bronx. In 1913, the City of New York purchased and moved the cottage to the new Poe Park. Opened as a museum in 1913, it is maintained as a memorial to Poe with period furniture and exhibits on the writer, his life and times.
