Enzian Theater is Central Florida's only full-time, nonprofit alternative cinema, serving the community for nearly two decades. Complimented by the weeping oaks, a bubbling fountain, and a beautiful courtyard, the theater's casual nature makes it one of the area's best.
The
Enzian is a member-supported organization, and the theater's mission is to
entertain, inspire, educate, and connect the community through film. Most movies screened at the theater are geared towards adults, but there are definitely films - and festivals - for the entire family.
The theater itself is a cozy retreat, with
plush chairs and interspersed tables that give off the sense that you're watching a movie at home - with a hundred or so of your closest friends. You can even have a
full meal at the theater. Offering sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and more, the menu provides more than your typical popcorn option.
Speaking of festivals, the
Enzian hosts some of the best around.
KidFest, normally held in the summer, is a week-long event featuring a
Young Filmmakers' Academy and screenings of unusual and classic children's films. By far the most popular is the
Florida Film Festival, a ten-day event with narrative and documentary features and shorts, animation, family films, and a full array of educational forums, glamorous parties, and other special events.
Another special program - co-presented with the City of Winter Park - is
Popcorn Flicks. On the second Thursday of each month,
classic films are screened for free in
Central Park. Free popcorn is provided, but bring your own blanket or lawn chair. And be prepared for a pause in the movie when the train goes by.
