Contrary to popular belief, the
Everglades isn't made up solely of the "river of grass" habitat most of us imagine. Cypress swamps, mangrove islands, and pine and hardwood forests dot the enormous park, and can be accessed by one of
five Visitor Centers. These are located at considerable distances from each other (it's about 90 miles over two-lane highways between the two farthest centers), so good planning is key if you want to see all of the park with kids.
Ranger-led
tours and talks are scheduled at all five Visitor Centers, some especially tailored to families. Look online for a schedule - these activities are scaled back from Apr-Dec. The
Junior Ranger program gives kids a chance to complete an activity booklet, get their booklets stamped, and send them in for a cool patch. Booklets can be picked up at the Visitor Centers.
The
Shark Valley park entrance lies closest to Miami at the northeast corner of the park. To the south, the main Coe entrance leads to the Royal Palm and Flamingo Visitor Centers. The Gulf Coast Visitor Center lies 90 miles to the north and west of Coe.
