    about Exploratorium:

The winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the best Playspace/Partyspace for Big Kids in the Bay Area, the Exploratorium is known as the first and foremost of the world's interactive museums.

The Exploratorium is like a mad scientist's penny arcade, a scientific funhouse, and an experimental laboratory all rolled into one. There are over 400 hands-on exhibits on display at any one time. Kids can touch a tornado, shape a glowing electrical current, or see a roundworm glow green with the implanted DNA from a jellyfish.

One of the most popular exhibits is a sensory journey in total darkness through the Tactile Dome. Advance reservations for the Dome are recommended; call 415.561.0362 to schedule a date and time. The Dome is generally open Tue-Sun at 10:15am, 12n, 1:45pm, 3:30pm, and 5pm. On Fri and Sat after-hours tickets, at 6:45pm, are available.

The Museum is closed Mondays except MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day.

    tips:

Buying a membership ($85 and up for family pass) gives you free admission to more than 200 science centers worldwide, including Chabot, Habitot, and the San Jose Tech Museum. It also grants you birthday party rentals for ages six to 12.

    getting there:

From Lombard Street, follow signs to the Golden Gate Bridge. Look for a large Exploratorium sign. Take a right turn off of Lombard, and follow the road around the building. There is lots of free parking.
