The
winner of our 2008
Parents' Picks quest to find the best
Playspace/Partyspace for Big Kids in the Bay Area, the
Exploratorium is known as the first and foremost of the world's interactive museums.
The
Exploratorium is like a mad scientist's penny arcade, a scientific funhouse, and an experimental laboratory all rolled into one. There are over 400 hands-on exhibits on display at any one time. Kids can touch a tornado, shape a glowing electrical current, or see a roundworm glow green with the implanted DNA from a jellyfish.
One of the most popular exhibits is a
sensory journey in total darkness through
the Tactile Dome. Advance reservations for the Dome are recommended; call 415.561.0362 to schedule a date and time. The Dome is generally open Tue-Sun at 10:15am, 12n, 1:45pm, 3:30pm, and 5pm. On Fri and Sat after-hours tickets, at 6:45pm, are available.
The Museum is closed Mondays except MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day.
