about Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden:

This 83-acre garden, home to many tropical and sub-tropical plants, eleven lakes, and open meadows between different plant groupings, is a beautiful place to visit. Exploration off the pathways is encouraged in most areas of the garden, allowing hands on experience of the many beautiful and exotic plants and flowers.

The Rainforest area, with its aerial irrigation system, houses many true rainforest plants, the sunken garden, a natural limestone hollow, contains a waterfall and pond, and the Keys Coastal Habitat, a wildlife refuge for native and migrating birds, are a few of the highlights at the garden.

Tram tours leave daily, on the hour, from the Garden Shop, starting at 10am and ending at 3pm (Sat-Sun 4pm). The tour lasts approximately 40 minutes, and is filled with factual information about the plants in the garden.

The LEAF (Let's Explore at Fairchild) program is a nature club at the garden for children ages 8 to 11. Activities include growing plants, exploring, nature crafting, and collecting. The multi-week sessions are held three times a year on Saturdays, from 9am-12n. Cost for the program is $115 to $145. Please call the main number, ext. 3322 for more information.

Fantasy Theater, available in the summer months, includes a ride on the educational tram to a dramatic garden performance recommended for children aged 5 to 13 years.

Also offered during the summer is the Junior Naturalist Summer Camp, called Bugs, Butterflies, and Botany. The camp, for children between the ages of six and 10, is scheduled for June 11-22, 2007, from 9am to 3:30pm. The cost is $375 for members and $450 for non-members. Call for more information.

The Garden Shop, though expensive, offers a wide range of unique garden-oriented gifts and books. We saw tricycles made of bamboo (special order), lunch sacks decorated with frogs and butterflies, and plant/garden books for all ages.

The Garden Cafe serves reasonably priced hot dogs, tuna and shrimp salad sandwiches, green salads, sodas, and ice cream.

tips:

Fairchild is adjacent to Matheson Hammock Park - so make a day out it!

getting there:

U.S.1 to LeJeune Road (SW 42nd Ave.) and head south. At traffic circle, continue in same direction, but road changes name to Old Cutler Road. Continue south; the garden is on your left.
