The wide array of wetland habitats (fresh water ponds, marshes, expansive flats, and open salt water) make Farmington Bay very appealing to many kinds of wildlife. Hundreds of thousands of waterbirds, songbirds, and raptors visit during the migration and nesting seasons. More than 200 species including bald eagles, Wilson's phalaropes, tundra swans, and great blue herons have been documented on the management area.
Farmington Bay is open year round, seven days a week. Hunting season runs from the first Saturday in October through early January. It is accessible for airboats, outboards, canoes, and walk-in hunting.
Wildlife viewing is most popular during the spring and fall migrations, which occur March-May and August-October. The best viewing opportunities are often right from the car. It's a good idea to bring binoculars and/or a spotting scope as well as a bird field guide.
