about Fernbank Science Center:

The Fernbank Science Center opened in December 1967 and is home to one of the largest planetariums in the United States. Its 70-foot diameter domed ceiling forms the projection screen, which displays an authentic reproduction of the sky.

Celestial bodies observed include the sun, the moon, the visible planets, no less than 8,900 stars, the Milky Way, and certain nebulae and star clusters. The movements of these objects - as they change with time - are shown at an accelerated rate. Special effects like black holes, rotating galaxies, and rings of Saturn offer dramatic highlights in the program.

General and Family planetarium programs begin promptly. Children under five years of age are welcome in family planetarium programs, and parental discretion is advised for general programs. Visitors can experience the planetarium programs for an admission fee of $4 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Programs vary in content. Please check the website for a detailed schedule.

The Fernbank observatory houses one of the largest telescopes in the southeastern United States and one of the largest instruments dedicated to education and public viewing. Weather limits view times. Please check website for details.

The Exhibit Hall spans 9000 square feet, surrounding the planetarium theater. The two-level space offers displays reflecting the Center's slogan, "Fernbank, From the Forest to the Stars." The exhibition, Between the Planets features a large meteorite collection that includes a fragment from the planet Mars, a four-foot rotating Mars, and a video of a comet collision. Some meteorites can be touched.

Also found in the Exhibit Hall, the Century of Physics exhibit includes 12-foot tall posters, graphically showing the development of science from the initial discovery of radioactivity through electronics to the Internet. Displays in the Exhibit Hall vary throughout the year.

For garden enthusiasts, the Home Composting Educational Area shows numerous types of working compost bins that homeowners can easily make or buy themselves. Guest can enjoy six sample gardens. Hours of operation are Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm; Sat 10am-5pm; Sun 1pm-5pm.

In the afternoons and on weekends, public visitors to Fernbank Forest can walk the 15 miles of paved trails and enjoy the beauty of this 65-acres of unspoiled woodland, led by a seasoned trail guide who may emphasize tree identification, wildflowers, forest ecology, and other appropriate theme. Tours are offered Sun-Fri 2pm-5pm, and Sat 10am-5pm. Spring Migration Bird Walks begin at 8am on Saturdays. Please check website for details.

Lockheed Martin Aviation Camp is held for rising fourth through sixth graders each summer. Call 678.874.7113 for current pricing and availability. The Center is closed on all major holidays.
