Originally built in 1898, the Ferry Building survived both the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes but was nearly done in by bad renovations in the 1950s and subsequent neglect. What was once a beacon for tens of thousands of travelers soon is now a food lover's paradise - the home of the
Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market, as well as home to shops plying the best artisan and organic food products of Northern California.
The historically signifigant building's exterior sandstone and windows have been restored, along with the Terrazo stone floor of the skylit atrium lobby. The building is once again deserving of its home at the head of Market street looking out over all the famous Bay landmarks.
The building still serves as the port for transbay ferry services between Marin and Alameda counties. Muni 2-6-7-9-14-14L-14X-21-31-32-66-71-71L; Golden Gate Transit 67-69.
