Just beyond the entrance into Stanley Field Hall on the main floor of the
Field Museum, come face to face with
Sue, the largest, most complete, and best preserved
Tyrannosaurus Rex in the world. Discovered in the badlands of South Dakota in 1990, Sue is now permanently at home at the
Field Museum.
And, in addition to visiting Sue, dinosaur fans have even more to explore. On the Upper Level balcony, the
Dino Zone exhibit features a large collection of fossils where visitors can examine touchable dinosaur teeth, claws, and bones, and learn how paleontologists discover dinosaurs. Next to
Dino Zone, at the
McDonald's Fossil Preparation Laboratory, see the
Field Museum staff preparing fossils from all over the world. (Open on weekdays from 10am-2pm, and on weekends from 10:30am-4pm.)
Kids can prepare for this exhibit by visiting Sue online at the link above. Or, to take advantage of the self-guided
Family Adventure Tours which highlight some of the Museum's most popular exhibitions, download one of the tours online, or pick up the information at a kiosk in the Stanley Field Hall. Each adventure focuses on a different theme, so exploring something new with each visit is easy.
The
Crown Family PlayLab is an interactive area where kids can become scientists, dig up fossils, conduct a symphony, and paint a masterpiece. The space is open Mon-Sat, 10am-3pm; Sun 11am-3pm.
The museum hosts
themed summer camps, which often tie in with current exhibits, for kids ages three to 14. Call
312.665.7500 or check the website for details.
Family membership options start at $100/year.
