Fort Belle Fontaine Park was established in 1805, originally serving as an American Indian trading post for local Sac, Fox, and other native tribes. The Belle Fontaine site also served as the launching or stopover point for a number of expeditions to the far reaches of the American West, including that of Zebulon Pike in 1805 and the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery in September, 1806.
The park features four distinct areas: the Missouri River section, Belle Fontaine Spring, Coldwater Creek, and a 50-acre upland prairie and wetlands. The Lewis & Clark Interpretative Trail is a family favorite for hiking; it includes a trailhead and interpretive signage and benches.
