At present, the United States Army Fort Hamilton Garrison is the home of the New York City Recruiting Battalion, the Military Entrance Processing Station, the North Atlantic Division Headquarters of the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the 722nd Aeromedical Staging Squadron. The cornerstone of this coastal defense fort was set in 1825, and the first garrison flag was raised in 1831. While many of the original structures are gone, some having yielded to the construction of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, part of the old fort remains on the grounds of the United States Army Fort Hamilton Garrison. Building 220, the old fort in bldg. 207, and the Harbor Defense Museum in bldg. 230 are on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic museum is located in the caponier of the old fort and is virtually untouched. A visit here offers great historical perspective on role of the Army in the history of the city. In October 1997, Fort Hamilton transitioned to the Military District of Washington and in 2002, came under the command of the Northeast Region of the Installation Management Agency, proudly serving as the Army's Ambassador to the Greater New York Metropolitan Area.
