The only President elected to four terms faces off with the nation's third President (
Jefferson, of course), in the Tidal Basin.
The
Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial traces twelve years of American history through a sequence of four outdoor rooms - each one devoted to one of FDR's terms of office. The 32nd President is depicted as a 10-foot statue in a wheeled chair; a bas-relief riding in a car during his first inaugural; and with Eleanor - the only first lady visible in any presidential memorial. Our kids' favorite statue? The three-foot high Fala, Roosevelt's dog, whose metal coat has been petted to a high sheen!
The south end entrance features an
Information Center and a bookshop, which is open from 9am-9pm.
The park surrounding the monument features waterfalls, pools, and peaceful vistas (including the cherry trees around the Tidal Basil); a lovely place to stroll or sit. Children love all the water, huge boulders to climb on, and being able to touch the statues. The park is also ideally situated for airplane and helicopter sightings.
