The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery are two separate Smithsonians with a common theme: together, they form the national museum of Asian art. The galleries offer one of the Western world's most refined collections of Asian art and, interestingly, a terrific collection of paintings by James McNeill Whistler.
Free Highlights tours of the Freer and Sackler galleries are offered daily at 12:15pm, except Wednesdays. Group tours and foreign-language tours are available through advance reservation. Sign-language interpreters are available for hearing-impaired visitors, and tactile tours on the Arts of China, Arts of Japan, Ceramics in Asian Culture, and Hindu and Buddhist Arts are available for vision-impaired visitors.
Allow four weeks' notice for all group and special tours. For more information or to arrange a tour, call 202.633.1012.
The Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Auditorium, located in the Freer, often hosts free public programs, including concerts of Asian music and dance, films, lectures, chamber music, and dramatic presentations.
Family ImaginAsia programs, for children ages eight to 14 accompanied by an adult, are offered regularly throughout the year and allow kids to explore an exhibition and create a related art project to take home.
