About Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company

Getting to the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company may be half the fun, as you wander through Chinatown, past the tourist shops, and down an alley that time forgot.

In the tiny old-fashioned factory, which turns out thousands of cookies every day, you can watch three women deftly fold thin discs of cookie dough over slips of paper. The dimly lit setting evokes another century, and two of the women seemed very tired by the time we arrived in the afternoon. But a third passed out thin wafers for a taste, and the kids found the old machines fascinating, and begged to come back another day.

Tips

Take home a bag of 40 fortune cookies for $5. And consider combining your visit with a guided tour of Chinatown.

Getting There

Between Jackson and Washington Streets. The closest reasonably priced parking garage is at Portsmouth Square. Bus 27.

My son and I went to San Francisco on his spring break a few years ago and we still talk about the Fortune Cookie Company. It was interesting to watch the cookies made and the nice women gave us the warm, delicious cookies that did not fold correctly. We bought some bags too. It is a great place to visit. and the cookies were excellent.

We visited with our Girl Scout troop during our San Francisco bridging trip. We stumbled on this shop, literally! Small inside but the ladies were so nice! The cookies are awesome, get the sample bag, yum!

Our brief visit to the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company is one of our favorite memories from our San Francisco stay. We wandered around quite a bit trying to find the place, and almost gave up on finding it, but we finally did find dimly lit Ross Alley and its hidden treasure, the Fortune Cookie Company. The shop is tiny - our family of three was crammed into it alongside a family of five. The smell of fortune cookies was delightful, the samples were wonderful, and we bought a large bag of fresh fortune cookies to take home with us.
