Detroit's Greektown is the most vibrant ethnic district in the area. More than 20 restaurants, ranging from fine dining, authentic Greek, and diner style, line the Victorian-era commercial streets. There are also coffee shops, bakeries, boutiques, and street musicians. The Greektown Art Festival packs 'em in every June.
One of the best places for families is Pizza Papalis, with its Chicago-style pizza (on Tuesdays kids eat for free), or if you want to stick with Greek cuisine, Laikon Cafe is the best for the money.
Pegasus Taverna is a more up-scale Greek restaurant with fantastic food and ambience. Fishbone's Rhythm Kitchen Cafe is a fun place, and the kids can check out the huge indoor waterfall that's in the same building.
If you get to the area early enough, treat the kids to a ride on the People Mover - there is a station right in Greektown. Just don't try this when the Red Wings have a home game (unless you and your children want to get shoulder to shoulder with sweaty men all hyped up on hockey).
getting there:
Located on Monroe Street, between St. Antoine and Beaubien Streets. From I-75, take the Monroe exit. Street parking is everywhere, but the best bet is the parking garage on Monroe, just west of the freeway.
