Haight Ashbury Community Nursery School (HACNS) is a cooperative nursery school, was founded in 1974 by a group of parents who were looking to establish a child-centered, parent-run school for young children.

During the day, children are free to engage in whatever activity they want - painting, dressing up, riding big wheels, etc. Children are only required to sit in a group for morning snack and for lunch. One of the working parents brings a project for the kids to do after morning snack - anything from art projects to obstacle courses.

At HACNS, parents are integral to the life of the school: they are decision-makers, workers, friends, teachers, and parents.
