about Herbst Swimming Pool/The Janet Pomeroy Center:
The Janet Pomeroy Center,(formerly the Recreation Center for the Handicapped) is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to serving the Bay Area community. The Herbst Pool is very popular with children and parents primarily because it's an unusually warm (90*- 93*), shallow pool.
The pool offers two swimming programs for infants and toddlers, as well as an instructional class for kids 5 -12 years old. They also offer recreational swim times twice a week for families.
The "Cuttlefish Swim" program is a water adjustment program in a relaxed, friendly and fun environment for children ages six months to five years old. Songs and instruction are mixed to provide a playful, fun atmosphere for water adaptation. These classes are held Tuesday through Fridays in the mornings as well as some afternoon classes.
The "Penguin Swim" program is a parent child class that teaches more advanced swim skills to children ages three to six years old. To enroll in this program, a child must be able to put his/her face in the water on request. The Penguin Classes are held Tuesdays and Fridays in the afternoon.
The "Sea Otter" Learn to Swim Program is offered to kids five years and older and is our only program taught without parents in the water. We offer classes in Red Cross swim levels 1- 4. This class is taught Mondays and Thursdays in the afternoon.
The "Recreational Swim" Is an hour-long swim time with no instruction provided. We do offer any of our swimming equipment such as Kickboards, Bar Bells, and various water toys to parents to use during this hour. Recreation swim is held Thursday and Friday afternoon.
All instructors are certified by the Red Cross, and there is always a lifeguard on duty. An enrollment form must be filled out before a child may enter the pool.
Extra adults (such as grandparents) are welcome to attend classes, but please do not bring other children into the water if they are not enrolled. There is a minimum of one adult per child required for the Cuttlefish and Penguin Classes.
tips:
The pool is located just behind the San Francisco Zoo, so some families drop by to see the animals afterwards. Lake Merced is located directly across the street and also offers picnicking and duck watching. Still, after an hour in the warm water - and often a snack or picnic lunch in the courtyard afterward - many kids are happily exhausted enough to call it a day.
getting there:
Getting There: The entrance to the pool is on Herbst Road which crosses Skyline Blvd. Bus 18 from Stonestown will drop you in front of the center. If you drive, park behind the center on Herbst Road near the main bus stop. There is plenty of free parking.

If you have a child with a physical disability, this isn't the place to go which is ironic considering the original name. There are no programs or staff for the disabled and they can't or won't give recommendations for teachers or therapists for your child. The warm water and shape of the pool would be ideal for kids with CP. The pool isn't open on weekends which makes it inconvenient for working parents.
My two older kids have a problem with swimming in pools that they can't reach the bottom of. This pool is only three feet in the first section and the beginning of the second (it's a U shaped pool). It's perfect for them. My son was taking lessons someplace else and hated it because he couldn't reach the bottom of the pool. After taking a class here, he absolutely loved it and felt very comfortable learning. The instructors are great. The program for the younger kids is like Gymboree in water, which makes it really fun for them. My baby just took a class today and she couldn't get enough of it. I highly recommend this program.
