Open to students ages 12-19, this two-week intensive program features day-long hands-on workshops that allow students to learn more about the history and aesthetic expressions of hip-hop culture: DJing, MCing (rapping), breaking (dancing), beat boxing (making percussive music with one's mouth) and graffiti art. Students also learn about the arts in general, and how hip-hop can be a positive, productive form of creative self-expression. The program culminates in a performance the last day of camp. (The 2007 student performance is held Idea Center at
Playhouse Square.) The camp has guest artists each year. (The 2006 Special Guest Artist was Popmaster Fabel, dancer and Hip-Hop Historian from New York City.) Camp is held Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 4pm; camp dates and locations vary from year to year. The
2007 Cleveland offerings, MUSIC OF MY MIND: Creating Musical Biographies, and Intergenerational Filmmaking Camp run July 23-August 3 at Idea Center at Playhouse Square, presented by Progressive Arts Alliance in partnership with Judson at University Circle.
