About Honolulu Theatre for Youth
Every year Honolulu Theatre for Youth's professional company presents a full season of plays for children from pre-school through high school. All plays are performed at Tenney Theatre at St. Andrew's Cathedral on O'ahu. At least one play per age level tours to Kaua'i, Moloka'i, Lana'i, Maui, and Hawai'i. These same plays can be seen by children and their families on Saturdays at Tenney Theatre.
Honolulu Theatre for Youth produces plays based on children's literature, adaptations of classics, and work that draws from or reflects on the cultures that make up modern Hawaii? history, folklore, or issues that impact local children. The theatre recognizes that Hawaii shares many cultural references and concerns with the mainland, but that many are also very different. Therefore, it presents a lot of new plays and puts many resources into supporting and developing local writers. Because so many plays are new works of dramatic literature, the theatre often publishes these scripts in simple, inexpensive editions. These can be purchased by teachers for use in the classroom before or after the production.
Honolulu Theatre for Youth is Hawaii's only professional nonprofit theatre and produces theatre and drama education programs that make a difference in the lives of young people, families, and educators in the state of Hawaii.
Honolulu Theatre for Youth works primarily through the public and private school systems in the state to reach about 90,000 people each season with over 300 school performances and 80 public performances targeted to specific ages. This allows teachers and parents to select plays appropriate to the interest level and curricular focus of their students and children. Honolulu Theatre for Youth has an international reputation for providing quality drama education to young people of all ages, experience, and ability.
