About Houston Zoo
The winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the best place for family bonding in Houston, the Houston Zoo is located on 55 acres in Hermann Park and has more than 4,500 animals.
Within the Zoo's grounds, families can enjoy the John P. McGovern Children's Zoo. This area has a petting zoo, a carousel with 64 different animals to ride, and several kid-sized animal exhibits. If the kids need to release some excess energy, they can romp around in the fenced-in playground or cool off in the water playground. (The water playground is closed from December to March.) Families can also take a break in the shaded butterfly pavilion, which hosts some entertaining shows.
Birthday party packages are available, or visitors can host their own parties at the Zoo. (You may bring your own food, but please no glass containers, alcohol, straws, or balloons.) For more information, call 713.533.6797.
Camp Zoofari summer camps are for kids ages four through 15; members get first crack at registration.
Free days: The Zoo is free on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Columbus Day, and the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Note: The last admittance is one hour prior to closing time.

- The Houston Zoo is my 3 year old's favorite outdoor activity. Ever since she was 6 months old, we have had a membership and it has been well worth the 40 minute drive from our home. It has improved each and every year and looks like they are working on getting more beautiful exhibits opened soon. It's nice to be able to go whenever we want and take our time seeing all of the animals.

[Submitted by Kim8/28/09 - Our family practically lives at the Houston Zoo. It's a GREAT place where you can chill out with your kids, have some close encounters with exotic animals, and make some lasting memories. I personally don't mind that the prices have gone up a bit - it means that the exhibits are getting better for the animals and the Zoo's been able to make some improvements to make it even more enjoyable to visit.

Also, I've noticed a drop in the number of people wandering in the Zoo just to make trouble and tease the animals when Keepers aren't watching. It's not so cheap to just wander in and do that anymore - I'm happy with the changes! Considering other major Zoos around the country started charging $30 - $35 entrance fees many years ago, 10 bucks to get into this huge Zoo is nothing!
If you buy a family membership it completely pays for itself in a few visits and it so worth it to be able to go through the Members Entrance on those busy days when the tickets lines can get long. Highly recommend this Zoo to anyone!
[Submitted by monkey2/12/09 - I have four kids, and even though it's getting pricy-I love taking them. Where else can you see so many different animals and have an entire day of fun for $10 a person? Take a cooler with food and drinks, and it makes it VERY resonable. Stay OUT of the gift shop though!
