Hoyne Street Playgroup is a 20-year-old parent coop located in the Albany Park neighborhood in the first floor of a two flat with a backyard. (The upstairs unit is occupied by a playgroup family.) Class size is limited to 10 children, with two teachers on staff each day, and three part-time teachers. The playgroup is built around play-based learning. The parents direct curriculum in conjunction with the teachers, with a monthly focus on a particular topic. The daily schedule includes a song time and a story time, nap or quiet time in the afternoon, and regularly scheduled field trips. Service requirements for parents are straightforward. Each family is rotated into a lunch schedule and brings lunch and two snacks for the childre about twice a month. Each family is also expected to sit on the board as an officer for a six-month period during their child's stay, and to help with spring cleaning twice a year.
