One of the city's newest playscapes - at Pier 51 - boasts a commanding view of the Hudson River and benefits from a nice breeze most summer days.
Water play abounds, with free-form sprinklers and even a little winding "canal" that meanders through much of the playscape (a perfect spot to dampen some sand).
The section closest to the water offers a boat-themed area, complete with prow, mast, and ship's wheel.
Climbing sections for older and younger children are separate from each other; benches line the edges of the scape, giving parents a comfortable perch for child-watching; and the padded ground provides somewhat bouncy safe landings. The playground is attended by a park ranger, and has only one entrance/exit.
The only downside is the minimal shade, mostly covering the sand play area. Bring sunscreen.
The public restrooms, just outside the playground, are fairly new and usually clean, though the ladies' room has just three stalls.
