By every estimate,
Independence Hall is the epicentral birthplace of the US. Within its walls, the Declaration of Independence was adopted. It was here that the Constitution of the United States was debated and signed.
Guided tours are free and run about every 15 minutes. Guests must obtain free timed tickets at the
Independence Visitor Center (located at Sixth and Market Streets) on the morning of their visit.
The
Assembly Room where the Washington, Jefferson and Franklin met is furnished with antique furniture of the period. Kids will be interested to know that the British used the original furniture for firewood when they occupied the building, from 1777 to 1778. You can check out the
Pennsylvania Coat of Arms over the judge's chair in the Supreme Court Chamber - it is the original.
If your children don't have the patience for the 30-minute tour, there are other things to do on Independence Square, such as visiting the West Wing of
Independence Hall to see original printed versions of the
Declaration and Constitution and the silver inkstand used to sign them.
