Think of it this way: you're not so much abdicating a parental role as you are giving the kids a crucial life skill. And if it gets you out of the kitchen once in a while, all the better.
We're talking, of course, about cooking classes, and the Institute of Culinary Education is a great place to start. Originally known as Peter Kump's New York Cooking School, ICE started up on Manhattan's Upper East Side in 1975.
Most classes are hands-on courses consisting of one to five sessions, with course prices that range from $95 to $110 per session. While ICE primarily caters to adults, it does offer classes for kids, both solo and with parent accompaniment, on a regular basis.
Kids' Cooking Parties include a specially-designed hands-on class; a sit-down meal where kids eat what they cook; aprons to wear for the party; paper chef hats to decorate and bring home; and a cake or cupcakes for the kids to decorate. Parties can accomodate up to 30 kids, with a price tag of $2,700 for up to 20 children; $60 per additional child. A 20% service charge is also added. Contact 212.847.0707.
