The Jackson Street Roundhouse was built by the Great Northern Railroad in 1907 to service their passenger-service steam locomotives. It was part of the historic Jackson Street shop complex, which was founded just after the Civil War. Now the site brings railroad history to life for visitors.
Experience vintage modes of rail transportation including a motor car, speeder car, four-man pump car, caboose rides, and the "Rock Island Rocket Train." The turntable has been restored and the roundhouse is open for visitors all year long, with small exhibits on signals, dispatching, track repair, and train crews. Train rides are offered some Saturdays; call for dates. A gift shop stocks items for all ages.
