about Jungle Island:

Jungle Island - winner of our 2009 Parents' Picks award for best local tourist spot - is a themed animal park on 18-plus acres near Downtown Miami and South Beach.

Guests get an "up close and personal" view of animal life, particularly through the VIP Safari private tours. The park also boasts themed areas, such as the Manu Encounter, a free-flying aviary and natural reproduction of Peru's Amazonian park, where visitors have the opportunity to walk among macaws, squirrel monkeys, green iguanas, prehensile-tailed porcupines and a kinkajou.

Popular with families, the park offers exotic animal shows, private animal visits, and unique creatures from all over the world. Cat-lovers are mesmerized by Hercules the tiger, star of the "Jungle Encounters" show and a current contender for Guinness recognition as Largest Cat in the World. Hercules, often compared to his Hollywood movie star cousin, Napoleon Dynamite, weighs over 900 pounds and stand almost 12 feet tall.

Birds of a feather flock in the Island's signature amphitheater, The Parrot Bowl, site of the Winged Wonders show. Exotic avian residents such as a cassowary and an Andean condor are joined here by crowd favorites such as Lucy and Desi, the eclectus parrots that fly like footballs through the air.

The current "star" residents at Jungle Island are Peanut and Pumpkin, the adored and adorable two year old orangutan twins.

The Children's Area features a petting farm with llamas, goats, and more, and the interactive playground area and adjacent picnic areas are great places to let the kids run free.

The private beach, La Playa, is located next to the Serpentarium and is available for for beach parties, corporate picnics, and other special events.

At the Jungle-riffic Adventure, a camp runs during spring and summer where kids can experience hands-on interaction with different animals in the park. Other activities include arts and crafts, educational sessions with trainers, and attendance at three park educational shows. Lunch and a snack is included for each day, and every camper receives a photo with an animal and a T-shirt.

Annual passes are available.

tips:

Bring quarters to purchase food for the various critters. Take sunscreen and bug spray (in the summer, or if there's been lots of rain, there are mosquitoes about). If you're trying to avoid crowds, the front gate will know if field trips are expected.

getting there:

From I-95, take 395 East (MacArthur Causeway), make a right on Parrot Jungle Trail which is the first exit after the bridge. Follow the road around and under the causeway to the parking garage on the left-hand side.
