Named after the founder of the California Missions and located in
Presidio Park, the museum is
dedicated to preserving California's heritage. The museum isn't exciting to children, but it offers an interesting view of San Diego and its history not usually seen in tourist venues.
Artifacts from the time of the Spanish occupation are housed here, including items used by the Native Americans of the area, many of which were excavated from the archaeological dig still underway outside. Children can really get an idea of what life was like for the early settlers and the indigenous peoples with whom they shared the land.
On the second Sunday of each month, from 1pm-2pm, park rangers lead
free walking tours and explain the significance of Presidio Park. Meet in front of the Serra Museum. (This tour does not include entrance to the museum.)
