Perhaps your child feels that it's time to move his or her act beyond the dinner table and on to a live audience. If that is, indeed, the case, ("Take my carrots,
Peas!"), sign young Lucy or Emo up with
Kids 'N Comedy, which holds workshops and shows at the Gotham Comedy Club.
The
monthly workshops, for kids in middle school and high school (ages ten to 17), serve as an audition process for children and teens who are interested in performing in the
Kids 'N Comedy shows. Each child is given a videotape of their work, a valuable teaching tool that's included in the workshop fee of $60.
Beginner classes, for kids ages 10 to 13, and teen classes (ages 14-18) give kids the opportunity to learn the skills to create and perform stand-up comedy. Students view their favorite comics on video, and use their observations to help them perform physical comedy and improv. The semester ends with a stand-up comedy show starring the kids, for parents and friends.
Shows for kids, ages nine and up and their families, are offered fairly frequently (see our
calendar for dates), and might even be the first step toward that appearance on
The Tonight Show.
Kids 'n Comedy also offers a
summer camp program,
Camp Kids 'N Comedy. Call for details or registration.
