Our daughter has gone to a class for six- and seven-year-olds for about a year at the La Crescenta/La Canada location. The teachers are great and they have a good system. The kids have to put their materials away at the end of the class. Parents aren't encouraged to hang around after the free introductory lesson. However, while I think for our daughter it's been a great introduction to the fundamentals of drawing and painting, it's not the ultimate place for kids to express themselves creatively. Kids choose their projects and are shown how to break down an image into certain fundamental shapes (historically this is like what you would have learned as an apprentice to a master artist), then they learn to complete the picture step by step. The colors and shading end up matching the project image chosen precisely. It's great for two things: building confidence in young artists, because the finished products do look amazing and blew our relatives away, and for teaching shape and technique fundamentals. Our daughter has moved in the progression they set up from markers through crayons, pastels, water colors, and acrylics. It's also nice that they do a presentation of all the works finished that day, and everyone claps. Very positive place. But after another six months or so of this, I think we'll take her to a place where she can create works based on her own concepts.
My daughter has been a student for only a short while at KidsArt and we have been so very impressed by the incredible amount of progress that she has made! We credit her success in class to her teachers, who have been very enthusiastic and have managed to communicate some very sophisticated art skills to her in a way that she could understand and execute. Her confidance has soared since she joined the classes at KidsArt, and she now identifies herself as an "Artist"!
