Historic downtown Kirkwood is known by locals as Kirkwood Junction, an area that has been a regional destination for area residents since trains began boarding passengers at the Kirkwood Train Station in 1853. The downtown area's history was recognized in October, 2009, when it was added by the National Park Service to the National Register of Historic Places.
Spanning sixteen square blocks, the district houses more than 100 specialty shops and restaurants, all lined on pedestrian-friendly streets. The Kirkwood Farmers Market takes place April to November, Thursday through Saturday.
During October, the Farmers Market turns into a pumpkin patch, featuring numerous varieties of pumpkins, plus cornstalks, gourds, and natural fall decorations. Kids can play at Tractor Land, Fort Summit, and Needle in the Haystack
