As in most major metropolitan neighborhoods, the Los Angeles School District has a mishmash of highly regarded schools and those at the bottom of the totem pole: test scores, parental involvement, deomographics and facilities vary significantly from neighborhood to neighborhood, and school to school. State law requries that schools accomodate students from its own neighborhhod before offering open enrollment to students from elsewhere. Magnet schools, which specialize in particular areas such as performing arts, math and science, are another option. This site offers local contacts, addresses, and tips for parents and teachers.
