about La Jolla Cove:

Truly one of the most beautiful beaches in California, this tiny crescent of sand is a mecca for tourists and locals. Home of the La Jolla Underwater Park, the Cove is the best snorkeling venue in all of San Diego, offering underwater reefs loaded with sea anemone, mollusks, and starfish, and frequented by garibaldi, smelt, seals, and the occasional grouper fish. Because it is so popular, snorkeling here is best done in the off-season, early in the morning, or early in the evening. Otherwise, plan on competing with throngs of other swimmers.

As for surf, the Cove usually has gentle swells resulting in tiny shore-break waves due to the configuration of the coastline here, making it a perfect place for swimming with little kids. Board sports are not allowed, so don't bother dragging the boogie boards.

Lifeguards are on duty during the day. Restrooms and shower facilities are available in the park at the top of the stairs.

tips:

Try to limit the amount of gear you bring with you to this beach: the only way to access the beach is via steep stairways at either edge, and chances are you'll be a long way from your car.

getting there:

Access Coast Boulevard from Prospect Street at the foot of Girard Avenue. The San Diego Transit District bus 34 travels Torrey Pines Road. Get off at the intersection of Prospect St. and walk about 3 blocks.
