What to do when you have children of various ages and abilities to entertain? Consider an outing to the
La Jolla Recreation Center.
Equivalent in size to approximately two city blocks, the "Rec Center" consists of two sand play areas with fairly new and interesting
climbing structures (one more suitable for children under five, the other for older kids),
picnic tables, four
basketball courts, six
tennis courts, a recreation center with classrooms and an auditorium, and the
La Jolla Tennis Club and
Pro Shop. The basketball courts are usually open during weekdays, making this an ideal spot for
beginning bike riders or
inline skaters. It's also fun for
scootering.
Located just uphill from the
Children's Pool, across the street from the
Museum of Contemporary Art, and a short walk from
John Cole's Book Shop, the Rec Center can also be the perfect complement to a day's activities.
The Rec Center also offers a variety of children's programs, and individual or group tennis lessons are available through the
La Jolla Tennis Club. It holds annual
Summer Day Camps (ages six to 13) and a number of specialty summer camps, including Space In Action Camp (ages four to eight), Skyhawks Sports Camp and Baseball (ages six to 14), Mini-Hawk (ages three to five), Mighty Mite Sports Camp (ages five to seven).
Classes offered include
tap and ballet, Little Tykes Gym, Piano, Tae Chun Do, and Teenie Tunes. It also hosts
Parents Nights Out.
