The quintessential Southern California beach with
one perfect mile of wide white sand that stretches from the
La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club to
Scripps Pier. The Shores is the
best place in La Jolla for watersports such as boogie boarding, surfing, bodysurfing, and
beach parties because of the fire pits and
sand volleyball courts. Surfboards and boogie boards can be rented on the beach. Volleyball players need to bring their own net and ball. Designated
swimming areas separate from surfing areas nonetheless allow boogie boards. Children ought to be supervised so they don't get run over. The best spot on the beach for young children is south toward the entrance at Avenida de la Playa. The waves here are a little smaller, discouraging most of the boogie boarders and crowds. Another advantage is the proximity to the excellent
playground wedged between the grass of
Kellogg Park and the beach. Because of the plethora of activities available, this beach
gets impossibly crowded during the summer. Best to arrive before 10am if you want a decent parking space. Regardless, the walk from car to beach is a long one. If you can handle the trek, plunk yourself down as far north or south of the lifeguard tower as possible so you won't be stepped on all day. Lifeguards are constantly patrolling and there are two sets restroom/shower facilities at either end of the beach.
