Thanks to Pierre Laclede, a French fur trapper from New Orleans, this area of town - the
first settlement of St. Louis - began its development in the late 1700s as a trading post.
Today
Laclede's Landing is an industrial-warehouse-turned-chic historical district along the
Gateway Arch Riverfront. The nine-block area features cobblestone streets, many sidewalk cafés, and
specialty souvenir and gift shops. At night, horse-drawn carriages and live music give the area a festive flair, making it one of the premier entertainment areas of the city.
