Founded in 1982, the former first lady's Wildflower Center is a sprawling compound complete with a learning center, a gift shop, a library, 16 themed gardens (including a butterfly garden), and half a dozen nature trails through various landscapes.
The Little House Courtyard is designed with preschool-age kids in mind - a well-shaded space complete with tree stump stools, a framed hut similar to those used by Native American nomads, and large pots for digging up (plastic) lizards and insects.
Throughout the year, programs are offered for children and families, from nature hikes to seasonal and holiday festivals.
The Wildflower Center is open daily during wildflower season each spring; call or visit website for dates. Closed-toe walking shoes are recommended for trails and paths.
