The downtown skyline looks a little like Dorothy's Oz from the shores of
Lake Calhoun, the largest in the city's
Chain of Lakes. Just 100 years ago, it was a Native American settlement; today, it's ringed by mansions and high-priced condos, a mecca for
joggers, skaters, swimmers, and other active outdoorsy folks.
The lake has
three beaches: North, just west of the lake's zenith; 32nd Street, on the east side; and Thomas, at the south end. The first two have well-equipped
playgrounds. (In fact, pushing little ones on the swings at the 32nd site affords parents such a
gorgeous view they might end up being the ones begging to stay for just one more "underdog.")
Windsurfers and sailors cruise the waters here, while skaters and strollers enjoy
3.2 miles of paths. A fishing dock, archery course, sports fields and volleyball courts draw enthusiasts - as do the volleyball courts, where preening players and buff spectators vie for each other's attention.
The versatile
Tin Fish, an eatery at the
Calhoun Pavilion on the northeast corner of the lake, serves snacks and meals. Rent
canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats here for $11-$21/hour. The canal just north connects
Calhoun with
Lake of the Isles, where it's pleasant and tranquil to paddle away a summer evening. For a good workout, go on a windy day, when getting back to the canal can be a real challenge! Rental is available daily (10am to sunset) from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and on weekends (11am-7pm) in May, September, and October, weather-permitting.
Lake Calhoun and its facilities are run by the Minneapolis
Park Board.
