Boaters, swimmers, sailers, sunbathers, and fishers head directly to one of Lake Mead National Recreation Area's two enormous lakes; hikers, photographers, and roadside sightseers head for the higher grounds of the Mojave Desert.
Lake Mead - all 290 square miles of it - makes a great day-trip from Las Vegas: It's approximately 25 miles from the city's Strip. Picknicking, camping, waterskiing, and seeking the lakes' hidden coves by canoe are some favorite pastimes here.
Maps, directions, interactive exhibits, and information about tours and the area's wildlife can be found at the Alan Bible Visitor Center. Children can pick up the Lake Mead Junior Ranger Guide and Activity Book for free at the center and can earn a Junior Ranger badge and certificate by completing the book's activities. Several other ranger stations are located throughout the recreation area.
