The
winner of our 2009 and 2008
Parents' Picks quest to find the
best museum in Las Vegas, the
Las Vegas Natural History Museum features a number of galleries filled with exhibits and displays.
Children never tire of seeing dinosaur fossils or wild animals - even those frozen in time - from the African savanna: Head to the
Dinosaur and
Africa Galleries for these exhibits.
The
Marine Life Gallery features live sharks, stingrays, and eels in a 3,000-gallon tank, as well as several smaller aquariums with live fish. When young visitors are itching to get their hands into something fun, head to the
Hands-On Gallery, where they can dig for fossils, study animal tracks, learn about animal senses, and play at being paleontologists.
The
Jr. Scientist Club is typically held on Saturdays at 11am and offers school-age children the chance to experience real science up close. Dissections of cow eyes and owl pellets, DNA extraction, and making fossil kits are just some of the hands-on activities that have been offered. Children can also make a
"Critter Connection" - that is, encounters with live animals - on Saturdays at 1pm.
