Originally commissioned for the State House (now
Independence Hall) bell tower, the
Liberty Bell was, ironically enough, made in London. The bell was moved to its current location in
Liberty Bell Center in October 2003.
Talks about the Liberty Bell are presented at the
Center continuously, and enthusiastic docents are usually on hand to answer questions. Audio tapes can be played on request in 16 foreign languages.
At 2pm EST each Independence Day, children who are descendants of signers of the Declaration of Independence participate in
a bell tapping ceremony, tapping the Liberty Bell 13 times while bells across the nation ring 13 times in honor of the patriots from the 13 original states.
There are
no restrooms in
Liberty Bell Center. The nearest restrooms are available in the Visitor Center at Fifth and Chestnut Streets.
