The
Lion House (located next door to the
Beehive House in
Temple Square) served as an overflow for Brigham Young's very large family. Today, the house serves as a kind of party palace, and a child having his or her birthday party here will remember the two fun-filled hours for years to come.
A pioneer birthday party, for children ages eight to 12, provides participants with a sense of how their 19th century counterparts might have celebrated their birthdays. The party room is decorated with child-sized antiques, boys wear coonskin caps, and girls wear pioneer bonnets (but the birthday girl gets to parade around in an extremely
outside-the-theme tiara). Guests play pioneer games, listen to pioneer stories, and pull taffy. A light lunch of ribbon sandwiches, vegetable sticks and a nut cup is served with peach punch. Ice cream and a birthday cake with the birthday child?s name on it is included, as are party invitations (available in The Lion House office). Birthday presents from guests are held in an old washtub until the birthday boy or girl is ready to open them.
A special gift from the
Lion House is included - choice of a stuffed lion or porcelain doll.
Parties are priced for ten children and two adults. A $75 deposit is required 2 weeks before the party. Party times during the summer are 10am, 1pm and 4pm but only 4pm during the rest of the year. Reservations are taken well in advance.
