Rated a moderate hike, the
Little Cottonwood Canyon Trail is 3.5 miles long one-way, and has an elevation change of 1,360 feet. It takes approximately two hours to hike it one-way. The trailhead is shared with the
Temple Quarry Nature Trail. Look for the trailhead at the far end of the parking lot. Little Cottonwood Canyon Trail follows an old hydroelectric pipeline and old mining roads. The trail intersects a paved road and a couple of gates. Go around the gates, but don't go down the paved road; it may be trespassing on private property.
When heading into the wilderness, it's always smart to bring a daypack stocked with bug spray, sunscreen, water, tissue, and snacks. It's also fun to bring along a field guide or two and some binoculars so
wildlife viewing opportunities aren't missed. The canyons are great places to see birds, moose, butterflies, wildflowers, deer, and much more. Always make sure wildlife viewing is done from a safe distance; use the binoculars to get a closer look.
No horses, dogs, or motorized vehicle use is allowed on the trail. Skiing and biking is okay, and hikers should be aware that this trail is heavily used by mountain bikers.
