We can't think of anyone to compare Little Saplings to; this little company is in a little class by itself. The gist of it is that Ruth Steinberg and her children's gardening team empower kids as expert gardeners - whether or not Mom or Dad has a green thumb.

We first encountered Little Saplings as guest instructors at a couple of Westside summer camp programs, but owner Ruth Steinberg also works with kids in their own gardens, and her love for greenery is infectious. Home visits help families to create a garden of any size, in any space, that the entire family - or just the kids - can own and maintain.

Initial consultations are free; later visits are charged at an hourly rate.

Birthday parties can be arranged to fit any family's needs, either in the child's own garden, or at a park where gardens can be created in pots (to take home as favors); in addition to gardening, activities can include nature walks, scavenger hunts, mud pies, and anything else plant-related. Call for party prices.

Ruthie is full of passion and creativity. Her contribution to edible and beautiful gardening will benefit us all for many generations to come. It's been a pure pleasure to work with and know her for the past 10+ years.

It has been an absoutely amazing experience having Ruth come to the house and get my daughter - and me - excited about gardening! She is delightful and inspiring and her enthusiasm is contagious. I believe this to be better than any class - as kids create something that grows around them! High recommendations! Ann

Planning a party can be stressful but Ruth makes the whole process a pleasure. From returning email inquiries promptly, to working within a budget, even meeting with the client ahead of time so that decorations can be worked out--Ruth could not be more accommodating and kind! The little things matter and Ruth did not leave out a thing. She brought all kinds of beautiful shells and smooth pebbles to line the children's planters. She came prepared with a flat of colorful zinnias for the girls to bring home as party favors. She even had the seeds, soil, planter boxes, and, most importantly, a wealth of garden knowledge to share with the guests. I wasn't sure if a group of 8-year-olds could be entertained for nearly 2 hours in a garden alone but Ruth armed each of them with cute magnifying glasses and off they went. Many had questions, which she answered patiently and enthusiastically, some children wanted to taste licorice leaves, and everyone wanted to smell the sweetness of baby peaches. I can't thank Ruth enough for making my daughter's 8th birthday so memorable. I'd highly recommend her for any party or learning adventure!
