about Local Color:

If you're exploring the Pike Place Market with kids, at some point you might want to find a quiet place to retreat from the bustle on the street. Local Color, located in the heart of the Market, is a place where adults can have a cup of coffee and browse the gallery while kids get busy in an art area set up just for them. The spare, light space features a coffee bar and tables at the front - choose between the usual coffee and juice offerings and a nice selection of baked treats. Further back, look for gallery space that features a rotating selection of artists. At the very back of the store, kids can relax in the separate Petite Gallery. In the Petite Gallery, kids sit at a small table and chairs and create art that is hung on strings stretched between the wall and a post. The papers form a dynamic barrier-display that separate the Petite Gallery from the rest of the gallery, giving the area a secure, secluded feel. In a nice touch, the children's art is sold on a donation basis, with proceeds going to the nearby Pike Place Daycare and Preschool. Co-owner Sydne Albanese's studio opens into the children's area, so kids can relax, watch an artist at work, and create a masterpiece of their own.

getting there:

Located in the Market at Stewart. The Market is located in the heart of downtown, between 1st Avenue and the Waterfront, and Pike and Virginia Streets. Pike Place is the street that goes through the Market; avoid driving through it at all costs. From downtown, drive west along Pike Street or Pine Street to 1st Avenue. Walk one block west, down the hill, into the Market. Park in numerous pay lots along First. Metered parking is available on the streets. Public transportation: 1st Avenue is served by Metro buses from all over the city. Routes 15 and 18 travel all along 1st. The Waterfront Streetcar stops right in front of the Pike Street Hillclimb from the International District and Pioneer Square. The Hillclimb goes directly to the market. An elevator is available for wheelchairs/strollers.
