Behind the ball fields, playgrounds, picnic tables, and pretty fishing-lake, there are three hiking trails through this Macedonia city park. Because the individual trails are rather short (combined, they total three miles) and the park is full of play equipment, Longwood is a great destination for kids.
It's also nice for trail runners because the trails are soft, flat, and relatively free of obstructions. Young nature-lovers will have fun looking for frogs, deer, hawks, and a variety of wildflowers on the soft trails. Expect to bring home a layer of mud on everyone's shoes, and don't try to push a stroller here.
At first glance, you'll think Longwood Park is dedicated to sports - volleyball courts and soccer, softball, and baseball fields dominate the grounds. But follow the entrance road and you'll find playgrounds and picnic tables, shelters and grills, a picnic area, and the entrance to the shady trails.
Kids can practice casting into the three-acre, stocked fishing pond and cross-country skiing is allowed on the trails.
