Macy's, the mega-chain department store, offers good infant, child, and teen departments, as well as infant layette items and a small supply of baby toys. Most infant through grade-school clothes for boys and girls are rough-and-tough (Carters, OshKosh, HealthTex), with a few more expensive labels (Ralph Lauren, Little Me) thrown in. Merchandise for little girls used to be exclusively sweet and demure, but lately we've noticed styles for older girls and women, cut very small, creeping in. If you want to dress your two-year-old in a low-cut spangly blouse with a filmy skirt, this is the place to go. Macy's recently started carrying shoes for kids; the selection is adequate and the shoes are very nice for the price. The Junior/Young Men's departments feature clothes with a hipper feel. You won't find too many clean-cut styles for older boys here - look for hip-hop and skater influenced clothes like baggy pants and logo t-shirts. We've sometimes had trouble finding clothes for boys too old for matching separates from HealthTex but too young for harder-edged middle-school styles - the selection for girls, toddlers, and preschoolers seems more complete.
