On Thursdays through Sundays between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, a dozen
illuminated floats and hundreds of
whimsical characters in glowing costumes light up downtown Minneapolis along Nicollet Mall.
Santa pulls up the rear of the beloved parade - a holiday hit
since 1992 - on his elaborate sleigh, preceded by fairytale vignettes, Dorothy Gale and friends, Captain Hook, a string of Christmas tree bulbs, local school and community bands and singers, and much more.
Each float plays its own theme song, but those watching the parade from indoors will probably only be able to make out the marching band music.
Volunteers collect cash, toiletries, and canned and boxed food for local charities before the parade starts and alongside the Circus Train float, so try to bring a donation.
Visitors can now also purchase
Hot Seats ($8; cider or hot chocolate included) in the heated, covered VIP grandstand at 12th and Nicollet. But plan ahead - tickets are likely to sell out before each year's parades begin.
The
skyways that bridge Nicollet offer the best
indoor viewing, but stake out a spot along the windows early, since the corridors are sure to fill; strollers may need to be left at the end. Most spectators sit on the floor, so parents will also want to keep an eye on little fingers and feet to avoid their being crunched underfoot as the crowd jostles for position.
Outdoors, the biggest crowds are between
7th and 9th Streets. Viewers may be more comfortable where there are fewer people, closer to the beginning or end of the route. Or not...being packed in with a crowd can generate a little extra warmth! Generally, the mob is in good spirits, allowing kids to
squirm to the front for the best view. Be sure children are dressed appropriately: They'll certainly need warm clothes outdoors, but they'll probably overheat if they can't doff all their outerwear in the crowded skyways.
Volunteers are welcome to participate (arrangements must be made in advance), and there are
opportunities suitable for children, school, and youth groups. Visit the website for more information.
