Mad Science5514

We were very disappointed in the Mad Science robot camp our son participated in last summer (2010). It was supposed to be about making robots. When we got there the first day, we saw the each robot was in a box that looked like you could buy in a toy store. All the kids had to do was put them together. I spoke with the instructor, who was a very young woman, and she assured me there be would lots of learning about robotics and science. But our son said to us that there was almost no instruction during the camp and the instructor did not even bother with the promised big final activity on the last day (I think it was creating story or something with the robot--can't remember after 11 months). He also told us that the instructor was a last minute sub for someone else. She was obviously completely unprepared. We will not be sending our son to Mad Science camp again, which is why I'm on this site searching for a better alternative.

My child has just finished one week of MS summer camp. Beware that like all summer camps, the quality of the instructor is what makes the camp. We had a gal who obviously would rather be anywhere than in a classroom of 8 kids all day. I'm not sure if my child got much out of this week aside from a bruised bonk on the forehead where another child whacked her (the kids ran wild!). However, to be fair, once a parent complained, MS was quick to replace our camp gal on Day 4 with a much more professional and enthusiastic instructor. As a parent, I've learned my lesson - to ask about the qualifications of the instructor and trust my instincts. If the instructor doesn't spark for you, he or she is probably not going to spark for the kids! Talk to the operations folks right away!! Gonna give this summer camp one star more than I feel it deserves as we've done Mad Science after school camps in another place and they've always been very well done. We've always been a fan.
